The Music Department is committed to teaching students how to think, create, perform, and communicate, and to do so in a critical, expressive, and articulate manner.
For major and non-major alike, this curriculum provides challenging encounters with the multi-faceted perspectives inherent in the study of music.
Like all majors at 17³Ô¹ÏÍø, a major in music prepares the student for a wide variety of career choices. Many of our music majors find it easy to double major in another academic area, due to the flexibility and ability to individually tailor the music major to one’s interests.
Our classes cover a wide span of musical interests including world music, film music, American musical theatre, traditional music of the southern Appalachians, music of Latin America, opera, conducting, digital composition, and more.
The Music Department provides cultural enrichment for the college community through performances, lectures, and master classes. In all of our endeavors, we seek to instill passion for music, music making, and its reception.

The Music Department awards several scholarships annually, including scholarships for entering and continuing students. All scholarships are available regardless of whether a student majors in music.
Cooper Ray Oljeski ’25 won 17³Ô¹Ï꿉۪s music department’s largest scholarship, the Donald Plott Music Scholarship, In addition to exploring his passion for music at 17³Ô¹ÏÍø, he hopes to pursue pre-medicine. Learn more about what brought him to 17³Ô¹ÏÍø and aspirations he has as a student.

The Jazz Ensemble is an auditioned "big band" of approximately 18 musicians. The group rehearses and performs throughout the year.

A community favorite, the 17³Ô¹ÏÍø Symphony Orchestra performs to sold-out crowds during the annual Holiday Gala.

Sloan Performing Arts Scholarship Brings a New Generation of Talent to Campus
Meet dancer Aiyana Thornton ’29 and theatre production manager Aishya Pillai ’29, the inaugural Sloan Performing Arts Scholars. 17³Ô¹Ï꿉۪s first-ever scholarship for the performing arts, the Sloan scholarship brings strength and talent to the college’s music, dance and theatre departments.
